History
The National Organization - SDE/GWIS
GWIS was established in 1921 - just one year after women achieved suffrage - by a group of women graduate students at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, which ultimately became the Alpha chapter. The Beta chapter of GWIS in Madison, WI followed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1922. The newest chapters are Psi in Pullman, WA, and Mu Sigma Upsilon at Michigan State University, both formed in 2005.
The Psi Chapter of GWIS at Washington State University
The Psi Chapter was co-founded in 2004 by graduate students Jean Sumner and Allison Matthews, from the Department of Psychology. Because the co-founders were from Psychology, they decided to designate the Chapter as "Psi". Since then our membership has been slowly growing, and reaching out to other departments on campus where women and women of color are underrepresented. Although we are located on the Washington State Campus, we are hoping to someday increase our membership to include the greater Washington State that our chapter truly represents.
